SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

Sexually transmitted diseases, also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are contagious infections that can be spread by either vaginal, anal, or oral contact. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause such diseases. Both men and women are susceptible to getting STIs, which can remain dormant for years and, when untreated, may have a much larger impact, such as chronic pain, infertility, or even severe cases of cancer.

CAUSES OF STDs

Bacterial Infection

Bacterial Infections like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis

Viral Infection

Viral Infections like HIV/AIDS, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), Hepatitis B and C

Parasitic & Fungal Infection

Parasitic and Fungal Infections like Trichomoniasis and Candidiasis (Yeast Infection)

TREATMENT FOR STDs

  • Antibiotics are used for treatment.
  • Chlamydia and Gonorrhea: One-time doses of azithromycin or doxycycline.
  • Syphilis: Any stage can be healed through injectable penicillin.
  • While there is no treatment for the infection, symptoms can be alleviated through medications, and transmission can be diminished.
  • HIV/AIDS: ART aims to manage the virus without allowing progression.
  • Genital Herpes: Antiviral nucleosides such as acyclovir and valacyclovir are used to prevent herpes outbreaks.
  • HPV: Gardasil is a type of HPV vaccine that works against some strains of HPV infection.
  • Trichomoniasis:  Metronidazole or tinidazole are both easy and effective treatments.
  • Pubic Lice: Permethrin or ivermectin-infused lotions or shampoos.
  • Yeast Infections: Antifungal medicine tablets such as fluconazole or creams.
