NAIL DISORDER

Nail disorders encompass a wide range of issues and alterations that affect the structure and appearance of the fingernail and toenail. Such disorders of nails can be due to changes in the form or contour of the nail as a result of trauma, infection, disorders within the body, or external influence. Even though some nail disorders can be classified as cosmetic, some of them pose alarming medical conditions that need to be taken care of.

CAUSES OF NAIL DISORDER

Fungal Infection

Resulting in the changing of the coloration of the nails while also severely thickening or leading to crumbling of the nails.

Skin Conditions

These include skin-related problems such as psoriasis and eczema, which can lead to pitted, ridged, or brittle nails.

Aging

People can often suffer from dry, pale, and ridged nails as a result of aging over a long period.

Disruption in the growth cycle resulting in the development of horizontal ridges along the surface of the nails.

Fungal Nails

Suffering from eating fungal infections, resulting in the nails becoming thick while changing color.

Ingrown Nails

Pain in the growth area of the nails causing swelling around the skin which then grows into the nails.

Brittle Nails

The ones who find immense difficulties in peeling, splitting, or breaking the nails.

Nail Psoriasis

This leads to pitting, discoloration, and loosening of nail plates

Leukonychia

Mild deficiency and trauma occurring to a person result in white spots or streaks.

TREATMENT FOR NAIL DISORDER

Antifungal Medications:

  • Oral antifungals, such as terbinafine or itraconazole, are applied to treat fungal infections of nails.

Antibiotics:

  • These are meant for your bacterial infections-rings that swell and pus forms around the nails.

Steroid Creams:

  • Helpful for nail psoriasis or psoriasis-related eczema.

Vitamin Supplements:

  • Taking vitamin supplements would help properly resolve the lack of nutrients responsible for poor nails.
  • This would involve the removal of part or the whole nail in cases when there’s severe finger damage.
  • An application of nail lacquer or a solution with antifungal or strengthening agents is included.

Moisturizing:

  • Applying a hand lotion while doing daily chores would prevent your nails from drying out.

Tea Tree Oil:

  • This oil acts as an antifungal agent.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals:

  • Wearing an apron can keep your nails dry and protected from water.

Proper Nail Care:

  • Avoid biting; too much buffing, which means you need a nail clipper on one side and a nail file on the other to cut your nail straight across.
