HIRSUITISM TREATMENT

Women suffering from hirsutism have an abnormal amount of hair growth on their face, chest, back, or abdomen. This hirsutism can lead to male pattern baldness since women suffering from the condition will have coarse and thick hair in places where hair is not typically found.

CAUSES OF HIRSUITISM

Genetics

Having a family history or genetic background of hirsutism can also be a reason why hirsutism occurs.

Medications

If a person takes anabolic steroids, testosterone, or certain immunosuppressants, then they might have increased hair growth.

Obesity

The excess fat in the body may elevate Insulin levels, which may trigger androgen production, and thus, hirsutism becomes worse.

Hormonal Disorder

PCOS is the most common cause and CAH is one of the genetic reasons why adrenal glands produce an abnormal amount of hormones.

TREATMENT FOR HIRSUITISM

Anti-Androgens:

  • These drugs include spironolactone, flutamide,  or finasteride, which are useful for reducing hair growth as they obstruct androgen receptors.
  • They are usually prescribed along with contraceptives, containing androgenic hormones, for birth control as they might be detrimental to the fetus.

Insulin-Sensitizing Agents:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome sufferers may take such medication to ameliorate insulin insensitivity, which eventually will reel in androgen levels.

Topical Treatments:

  • Eflornithine cream (Vaniqa): A hair-retarding chemical applied to the face and other body areas.

Laser Hair Removal:

  • Destroys hair follicles and prevents regrowth through high-intensity light radiation.
  • Best in terms of efficacy to reduce hair growth in the long run, although it needs continuity for multiple sessions.

Electrolysis:

  • Use of a needle to destroy hair follicles with an electrical current.
  • Results are long-lasting, but the procedure requires long sessions and is painful.

Waxing, Shaving, and Depilatory Creams:

  • Hair growth can’t be treated, but at least hirsutism has a short respite.

Weight Loss:

  • Androgenic hormone levels in women (with PCOS) can be reduced by losing extra weight.

Healthy Diet:

  • Good insulin/hormone management is possible with fewer refined sugars and a high intake of grains, vegetables, and proteins.

PREVENTION OF HIRSUITISM

Seek Early Diagnosis

A visit to a doctor is needed if the symptoms appear together with irregular menstruation and acne.

Follow Treatment Plans

Medications aimed at regulating and balancing hormones should be taken as directed.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

A combination of working out more and eating right can assist in regulating hormones and improving symptoms.
